The Murano Glass
The Murano glass tradition is probably over 1200 years old, but the earliest documented mention of Venetian glass dates back to the year 982, marking the appearance of the first known glassmaker in Venice. This historical record asserts that Venetian glassware boasts a history spanning over a thousand years, making it the world’s oldest surviving art glasswork.
Following the initial reference in 982, subsequent glassmakers emerged in Venetian records. However, by the 13th century, these artisans had shifted their operations from Venice to Murano. The concentration of glassworks on the island became so prominent that in 1291, the Venetian State mandated the destruction of all glassworks within Venice proper. Since then, Murano has earned the moniker “the island of glass,” and glassmaking became the primary, nearly exclusive, occupation for the people of Murano. Notably, some glass dynasties have persevered, maintaining continuous activity from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The charm of Murano glass objects has spanned centuries, even today Murano artistic glass is considered an excellence throughout the world, one of the most well-known and appreciated Italian brands.
